Sensex closes below 9000; near 3% Sensex slide IT, realty plunge

Equities ended sharply lower Friday as traders booked profits after a sharp rally in previous session. Fall in IT and realty majors hit the indices badly.
Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex closed at 8,964.27, down 265.48 points or 2.88 per cent. The 30-share index touched a low of 8914.38 and a high of 9340.69 during the day.
National Stock Exchange’s Nifty ended at 2712.95, down 75.05 points or 2.69 per cent. The index hit an intra-day high of 2821.15 and a low of 2701.35.
BSE Midcap Index ended 1.23 per cent down and BSE Smallcap Index declined 0.18 per cent.
Sterlite Industries (-7.37%), Jaiprakash Associates (-6.76%), DLF (-5.31%), TCS (-5.24%) and Infosys Technologies (-4.92%) were the top losers.
Tata Motors (1.46%), Grasim Industries (1.01%) and maruti Suzuki (0.56%) were amongst the gainers.
Market breadth on BSE showed 1099 declines against 982 advances.
