Hike in charges weighs down stocks of courier firms

Two listed courier firms were down by between 0.46% to 0.92% at 14:23 IST on reports courier firms had hiked courier rates due to rising fuel prices.

Blue Dart Express (down 0.46% to Rs 650) and Gati (down 0.92% to Rs 80.40) edged lower.

As per reports, big players such as Blue Dart, DTDC and AFL WIZ have revised their charges by 15-20% on account of the rise in fuel prices and there are indications that courier rates are likely to be hiked yet again by at least 3%.

Transportation constitutes 50-60% of total cost for the express industry. Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices have gone up 100% over the last year and have tripled over the last four years, climbing from Rs 21,000 per kilo litre in 2004 to more than Rs 70,000 now. Increase in jet fuel prices has forced aircarriers across the board to increase the aircargo charges by Rs 5 per kilogram.

Moreover, recently petrol and diesel prices were hiked by Rs 5 per litre and Rs 3 per litre, respectively.

Earlier this month, courier companies increased the fuel surcharge by 2.5% for domestic services and 6% for international services.

Couriers companies usually enjoy a margin of 10%. Companies claim that margins have come down drastically this year due to rising inflation.
