Mid-cap, small-cap stocks descend

BSE Mid-Cap and Small-Cap indices underperformed Sensex today.

As at 11:00 IST, the BSE Sensex was down 95.38 points or 0.54% at 17,431.55.

The market breadth was extremely weak on BSE. Only 383 stocks advanced as against 1941 stocks that declined and 27 stocks remained unchanged.

The BSE Small-Cap index underperformed the Sensex, declining 2.42% at 9,955.55.

Among the small-cap stocks, Advani Hotels & Resorts (India) slumped 10% to Rs 51.50, Bhansali Engineering Polymers slipped 8.30% to Rs 22.10, Spanco Telesystems & Solutions skid 7.52% to Rs 199.20, Bajaj Electricals fell 6.76% to Rs 518.30 and Hindustan Dorr Oliver declined 6.64% to Rs 132.15.

The BSE Mid-Cap index underperformed the Sensex, declining 2.17% at 7,612.36.

Among the mid-cap losers, Ess Dee Aluminium slid 6.8% to Rs 621, Ashapura Minechem slipped 6.59% to Rs 263.50, Kolte Patil Developers skid 6.34% to Rs 152.90, Core Projects & Technologies fell 6.12% to Rs 208.80 and Aptech declined 5.97% to Rs 245.

The BSE Mid-Cap index had underperformed the market in the one month to 6 February 2008, falling 18.81% as against the Sensex's 13.10% decline. It had, however, outperformed the market in the past three months, gaining 0.31% against the Sensex's 4.82% slide.

The BSE Small-Cap index had underperformed the market in the one month to 6 February 2008, falling 22.96% as against the Sensex's 13.10% decline. It had, however, outperformed the market in the past three months, gaining 8.34% against the Sensex's 4.82% slide.
