Sensex, Nifty ends down over 3% on higher inflation

The Sensex ended the day with a loss of 385.79 points, or 3.81% at 9,734.22 after touching a high of 10,109.45 and a low of 9,635.22. The broad-based NSE Nifty fell 102.30 points, or 3.42% at 2,892.65 after hitting a high of 3,007.80 and a low of 2,860.25.

Inflation rate for the week ended Oct 25 was 10.72 per cent against 10.68 per cent a week ago. The figure disappointed traders who expected it to come in single digit.

Major gainers in the 30-share index were Jaiprakash Associates (4.10%), Ranbaxy Laboratories (3.72%), Hindustan Unilever (3.05%), DLF (2.46%), Mahindra & Mahindra (0.97%), and Bharat Heavy Electricals (0.52%).

Major losers: Tata Steel (13.67%), Tata Motors (12.17%), Sterlite Industries (India) (11.33%), Reliance Industries (7.71%), Hindalco Industries (7.50%), and Bharti Airtel (6.62%)
