Sensex ends below 10k; Realty, metal stks plunge
The Sensex ended the day with a loss of 696.47 points, or 6.61% at 9,839.69 after touching a high of 10,405.39 and a low of 9,799.45. The broad-based NSE Nifty declined 209.60 points, or 6.66% at 2,938.65 after hitting a high of 3,147.20 and a low of 2,919.45.
ITC, which rose 0.06% was the only gainer at the 30-share index.
On the other hand, Jaiprakash Associates (12.21%), Sterlite Industries (India) (11.03%), Tata Steel (10.98%), Hindalco Industries (10.18%), DLF (10.15%), and Bharat Heavy Electricals (9.65%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
Overall market breadth was sharply negative. Out of the total 2,602 stocks traded at BSE, 759 advanced, 1,766 declined while 77 remained unchanged.
